Amethyst is a quartz that ranges in shades from deepest royal purple to palest lavender-pink. Amethyst is one of the world's most popular gemstones. We have amethyst in many cuts- pear, onion, heart, rondelle, and several fancy cuts, as well as amethyst nuggets.
The word "amethyst" is derived from the Greek word "a methustos", meaning "not drunk". The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing amethyst, or, if they could afford it, drinking from an amethyst cup, would keep one from getting drunk.
Traditionally, amethyst is a birthstone of February.
